This was the first time any of these girls (except Ariel) had played in a club tournament, and yes, I introduced them to the world of club play at one of the largest events of the year! We went into this two day event with the expectations of having fun! It only took about 10 minutes into the first game when I realized the girls were all getting competitive. I called a timeout and the rest was victory after victory all day long! The girls went from playing for fun to getting competitive right in front of a convention center full of players and spectators. They got to the convention center at 8am in the morning and we did not finish for the day until after 7pm. They were so excited to have played all day, they did a great job during their work duties as line judges, score keepers, libero trackers and number flipper. We were all excited to have won all of our games, the girls were all giggling as they got their stuff together to head back to the hotel and talking about how tired they felt. While I was checking out the schedule for the following day, the youngest of the group came up to me and expressed how excited she was to be on the team and actually getting to play. I told her we were not done yet, we get to play more tomorrow. Her eyes got so big, and then a smile turned into a frown. She said coach, I am so tired, do we have too! It was so cute, but yes, they did need to come back and start playing early the next morning. Even though we had a great Saturday of playing, Sunday showed their lack of training and experience. They were so tired and ready to go home. We won the first match of the day, and struggled to keep the next three matches close, but we could never fight through the physical and mental exhaustion.I was so proud of our team and from this point on, we set our goal on winning!
The girls never lost another tournament after their first. This was one of the best teams I have coach in a long time. They were so supportive of each other, and even though we had a star player on the team-she learned how to be a good captain, and motivator. Every player made key plays to win the games. We always changed the line up so we had different servers starting the game, everyone played and supported each other through their highlights and mistakes.
